Prince Charles and Camilla visited Monserrate palace in Sintra

Prince Charles and his wife Camila plant roses at the Monserrate palace in Sintra

Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, planted roses at the Monserrate park .

In 1858, Francis Cook hired James Knowels Jr. to design the pavilion that he wished to build in Monserrate. The architect, however, faced several limitations, since he had to restrict himself to the structures of DeVisme’s old neo-gothic mansion. Nevertheless, Knowels designed an original and very eclectic building. The facades of the three structures have gothic doors and windows.

Inside, the decorative exuberance of the plasterwork and the capitals emphasise the building’s oriental character. The superb gardens that surround the Palace were designed by Stockdale and Thomas Gargill, who, taking advantage of the Mountain’s micro-climate, created a magnificent park where one can still see more than 3 thousand exotic species.
